welcome to mayfield: day 1

[As you step out of the funhouse, blinking against the strong sunlight, it may seem at first that you've wound up back where you started. The carnival with all of its joys and wonders still stands, the Ferris Wheel looming majestically over Mayfield...

...except, did it always look that new and shiny? And it's not the only thing that got a makeover either; it seems like everything in the carnival has been fixed up from its previously rundown state. Fresh coats of paint gleam from every stand and every ride, and there isn't a spot of rust or a broken board anywhere in sight. At the entrance of the carnival hangs a large banner that reads:

Welcome to Mayfield - the Happiest Town on Earth!

Just how long were you exploring the funhouse for, anyway?

And as you start taking in the changes, you may notice one other minor difference: there are no drones to be found anywhere. It seems like the only other living beings in this place are your fellow townspeople who also entered the funhouse...well, that and the large, vicious looking rats that scurry around from place to place. But don't worry, there aren't that many of them and they only come out at night! So go ahead and enjoy having the carnival all to yourselves; after all, with all those minor safety issues fixed up, what could possibly go wrong?

The back exit of the carnival leads to a small street with four standard Mayfield houses and its church at the end. Attempting to leave the carnival via the entrance (although we can't imagine why you would) will only wind up looping you to the end of this street. Where the rest of Mayfield has gone, well...who can say?]

[All the classic games that you've enjoyed playing in Mayfield are still here, but it looks like someone upgraded the prizes! Instead of broken-down toys, brightly colored stuffed animals line the shelves, looking like they were just bought from the store. Even the jewelry's gone from cheap costume glass to what seems almost like genuine pearls and precious stones.

Of course, with no drones running the stands, there's nothing to stop you from simply reaching out and taking the prize of your dreams. It's certainly better than whatever you might have won in the other carnival, right?]

TAPE RECORDER

[Hidden away behind a shelf of stuffed animals is a tape recorder. There's a lot of tape on there, so feel free to leave messages for the other people in this carnival!]

It wasn't stealing since he was exchanging defective merchandise, right?]

[Kariya is wandering around between the game stalls, marveling at the splendor of the jewels and looking around at the high quality stuffed animals on the shelves.]

Hmmm... where are all of the employees? And this seems like a little much for carnival prizes.

[ Haruhi will lean in towards the stand before deciding deciding to jump over and take a stuffed animal... maybe several. She may be wary just in case someone catches her, but hey, it's their fault for not watching the stands.

[Bazett is not quite sure what she is doing back here, but she has grabbed several stuffed animals and two handfuls of jewels. The stuffed animals could be used as pillows, while the jewels could be used some sort of peace offering for the magi she had angered back in Mayfield.]

[She is leaning forward to grab yet another stuffed animal. Disturb her?]

[There isn't anyone running the food stand, but nonetheless delicious meals will appear on the countertop for anyone who orders something off the menu! Menu items include the usual carnival fried fare, the classic all-American burgers and shakes, and even salads for those of the more health-conscious people out there. No need to worry about food poisoning - you won't be getting any sort of side-effects from this 100% fresh dining. You won't be getting anything from them at all, actually, and that includes getting full, so feel free to eat as much as you want! Lucky for all the ladies out there trying to keep their figure, eh?]

[The food wasn't being prepared by drones, and not eating at the carnival had made Luke pretty hungry. And it smelled so good too! After glancing around and realizing there's no drones around, Luke will be taking something to eat.]

[well this was curious. Dainn could be satisfied with human food - however disgusting it was to the vampire - but he wasn't getting anything out of eating this "burger".]

Strange...this should still taste like something to me....

[Bazett sniffs at the food items. They definitely smell of less grease than the carnival fare at Mayfield. A taste of a deep fried hotdog shows that it is tastier than standard Mayfield food as well.]

[New places were always exhausting, this was no different. Towards the evening Latvia gravitates towards the food stall, having not eaten most of the day he's feeling exceedingly hungry. Unlike the carnival back in the old Mayfield, the food here smells surprisingly good. He quickly scarfs down the first burger, and the second. He rests his shovel against the side of the stall and leans against the wall as he gets through his third. Despite this, he's still feeling quite ravenous]

[Unfortunately, this guy hadn't eaten any of the food at the stands prior to entering the fun house. Upon finally finding an exit, he blinked... in confusion. He frowned... and then realized he was hungry.]

Eh...

[Hesitantly he made his way to a food vendor and grimaced. Of course the deep fried foods were still readily available but... wait, since when did they start serving salads?]

Pretty sure this stuff is just as drab as what the wife makes...

[Looking around... that's when things finally dawned upon him.]

Wait a minute... this is the same place?

FERRIS WHEEL

[Looks like the Ferris Wheel's gotten a bit of an upgrade! There's no one running it, but just have a friend pull the lever while you and your sweetheart climb into a seat, and away you go! Other than the occasional problem of the seats suddenly becoming insubstantial under you, the ride runs extremely smoothly, so go ahead and enjoy the spectacular view of Mayfield from the top. Unfortunately, there seems to be a spot of bad weather, as there's an extremely thick white fog obscuring the sight of anything beyond the carnival and the small street behind it....]

[The funhouse was weird when he ventured in, but now it seems like nothing compared to what he encountered upon leaving it. What happened?!

He walks towards the newly painted ferris wheel in wonder. Someone did a good job on this!]

...just how long was I in there?! [And then a sudden realization as he looks around.] Gumi? Where'd you go? [They were spending her birthday together. Did she run off without him?] If you're not here in two minutes I'm winning a stuffed animal without you!

[The easiest way to get as full a view of the carnival is to get to the highest point, right?

Hungary climbs tentatively inside one of the compartment, looking over the side to check if the lever is within reach. It isn't.]

(Kreutzer's taken it upon herself to ride the Ferris Wheel to the top, having one of her dolls pull the lever while she surveys the area...she wasn't expecting this place to look so...isolated. Also, she's standing on top of her booth instead of sitting in it, so yeah, how's that for an attention grabber?)

So this is truly closed off from the rest of Mayfield...why does this place exist?

[That's certainly a lot less rickety than before. It actually looks sort of pleasant, in the early evening light. She could always mark it with another smudge of blood to spy from it later, but she can only have one, and she ought to conserve her power...

Now, to get someone to pull the lever, so she can ride it...]

TUNNEL OF LOVE

[Where the freak show used to stand is now a grandiose Tunnel of Love. Hop in the swan-shaped boat with your sweetheart and take a ride down the shallow moat. The only decorations in the tunnel are paintings and photographs of a certain red-haired woman.]

[If you step out of the boat and walk along the edge of the tunnel, you'll eventually come to a tape recorder. There's a lot of tape on there, so feel free to leave messages for the other people in this carnival!]

ROLLAR COASTER

[You know the drill! Get a friend to hit the lever and enjoy the thrilling swoops and twists! Now with 100% guaranteed less maiming and death! (Offer void when parts of the track occasionally vanish for a few seconds.)]

[After appearing in this strange new Mayfield, Hawke wanders toward the rollercoaster first. She stares up at it warily, as though waiting for it to fall apart at any moment.]

Is anyone actually going to ride that thing? I'm sure it's not dangerous at all or anything.

HOUSES

[There are four standard Mayfield houses lining this short street, two on each side. The first house on the right has the number 501 printed on the mailbox; any attempt to enter this house will fail.

The other houses have no numbers on their mailboxes and are unlocked. The interior of all three houses are bare - there's a working stove and sink in the kitchen and the upstairs bathroom has a fully functional toilet, but there's no other furniture to be found. There's also phones in every room, but all you can hear if you pick them up is static.]

[After noticing how much smaller Mayfield has gotten, Luke drifts towards one of the houses and enters after knocking. It was pretty obvious this wasn't the same Mayfield, what with the lack of drones, and it didn't take long for Luke to start investigating the area.]

Hello? ...Is anyone there?

CHURCH

[The church lies at the end of the small street. The exterior looks exactly like the one in Mayfield; however, like the houses, the interior is completely bare. Even the pews are missing. Still, it's a good place to take a breather from the carnival, and it seems like the rats don't like entering here.

Any attempt to walk further past the church will wind up looping you to the entrance of the carnival.]

[Well Henry has unwittingly found himself in this new area. He was going to back out at the last minute until the funhouse had decided to drop him into the basement. So after exiting he found himself in this new shiny looking Mayfield. He's wandered over into the church looking around, pointing his flash light to bring light to the darker areas.]

Anyone here?
