welcome to mayfield: day 1

[As you step out of the funhouse, blinking against the strong sunlight, it may seem at first that you've wound up back where you started. The carnival with all of its joys and wonders still stands, the Ferris Wheel looming majestically over Mayfield...

...except, did it always look that new and shiny? And it's not the only thing that got a makeover either; it seems like everything in the carnival has been fixed up from its previously rundown state. Fresh coats of paint gleam from every stand and every ride, and there isn't a spot of rust or a broken board anywhere in sight. At the entrance of the carnival hangs a large banner that reads:

Welcome to Mayfield - the Happiest Town on Earth!

Just how long were you exploring the funhouse for, anyway?

And as you start taking in the changes, you may notice one other minor difference: there are no drones to be found anywhere. It seems like the only other living beings in this place are your fellow townspeople who also entered the funhouse...well, that and the large, vicious looking rats that scurry around from place to place. But don't worry, there aren't that many of them and they only come out at night! So go ahead and enjoy having the carnival all to yourselves; after all, with all those minor safety issues fixed up, what could possibly go wrong?

The back exit of the carnival leads to a small street with four standard Mayfield houses and its church at the end. Attempting to leave the carnival via the entrance (although we can't imagine why you would) will only wind up looping you to the end of this street. Where the rest of Mayfield has gone, well...who can say?]

R-right--Poland can be serious when he has to be. I'm sure he'd take care of Koharu...

[Even if Poland seemed to be having a minor breakdown in the fun house...]

Leedu. I promise, now is not the time to start second-guessing Poland, of all the time ever.

[vytis]

Y-yes, I-I'm sure they're fine. [He is going to have to cling to that for now. It is Poland, though, and generally Poland is good at not dying. Generally...]

Maybe they're just still in the fun house.

[technophiling]

[Poland is a fabulous phoenix, anyway. Stop worrying.]

That's definitely a possibility.

[vytis]

[Koharu is not quite as phoenix-like, though.]

I--I guess we should worry about this place first.

[technophiling]

[Mythical phoenix tears are a thing still, though, right?]

Yeah. Uh... want to keep exploring, I guess?

[vytis]

Y-yes, I suppose we should. [And that will distract him. Hopefully.] Have you found anything in here?

[mayfield_mods]

[In the kitchen, propped up by the stove, is a pamphlet.]

[technophiling]

[Estonia shakes his head.] Not really. Nothing yet.

[That doesn't mean he's going to stop looking, though, and so the kitchen is the next place he wanders, stopping when he sees the out of place pamphlet. At first he reads it from a distance, then he picks it up, staring at the last bullet point. That's either the implication that he's been on to something for months, or Mayfield is paying such close attention as to mess with him individually.]

Lithuania, come here.

[vytis]

[Curious himself, Lithuania follows Estonia over; obviously there was something of interest on that pamphlet.]

What is it?

[technophiling]

It's... an ad, of some sort. But look at this.

[He doesn't hand it over, too paranoid for that, but he turns it around for Lithuania to see, finger pointing out the "Enhanced Reality Programming" bit.]

[vytis]

Suspended animation and enhanced reality? [This is sounding more and more like one of America's movies.] Like those holodecks you were talking about?

[technophiling]

That'd fit a holodeck to a tee, yeah.

[vytis]

It would explain why things keep vanishing and reappearing here, too, I suppose... But what about the suspended animation part?

[technophiling]

Stasis. Plugged into the Matrix, so to speak. It'd be hard to identify specifics, but if this is the truth... There's not much we can do about it.

[vytis]

So we're all in chairs with plugs in our necks or something like that? [Look, Lithuania has actually seen a somewhat recent movie. It's a miracle.]

There has to be something...

[technophiling]

You're not the Chosen One by any chance, are you?

[vytis]

I probably would have figured more things out by now if I was. So--so, what do we do?

[technophiling]

Well... I guess we just try to regroup, compare notes, gather information so that we might be able to retaliate.

[vytis]

Y-yes, I suppose that's the only option we have at the moment.

[technophiling]

[Estonia lets out a breath, looking at the paper in his hand again before looking around the kitchen once more.]

Let's go see who else we can find here.

[vytis]

[Lithuania nods, again remembering Poland and Koharu still missing somewhere.]

That sounds like a good plan for now.
