welcome to mayfield: day 1

[As you step out of the funhouse, blinking against the strong sunlight, it may seem at first that you've wound up back where you started. The carnival with all of its joys and wonders still stands, the Ferris Wheel looming majestically over Mayfield...

...except, did it always look that new and shiny? And it's not the only thing that got a makeover either; it seems like everything in the carnival has been fixed up from its previously rundown state. Fresh coats of paint gleam from every stand and every ride, and there isn't a spot of rust or a broken board anywhere in sight. At the entrance of the carnival hangs a large banner that reads:

Welcome to Mayfield - the Happiest Town on Earth!

Just how long were you exploring the funhouse for, anyway?

And as you start taking in the changes, you may notice one other minor difference: there are no drones to be found anywhere. It seems like the only other living beings in this place are your fellow townspeople who also entered the funhouse...well, that and the large, vicious looking rats that scurry around from place to place. But don't worry, there aren't that many of them and they only come out at night! So go ahead and enjoy having the carnival all to yourselves; after all, with all those minor safety issues fixed up, what could possibly go wrong?

The back exit of the carnival leads to a small street with four standard Mayfield houses and its church at the end. Attempting to leave the carnival via the entrance (although we can't imagine why you would) will only wind up looping you to the end of this street. Where the rest of Mayfield has gone, well...who can say?]

OOC and extra information about this town can be found here - please read it before you start tagging! Remember, only those in the first group should be in this post!

[Hawke's already hopping behind the counter of one such stall to get a closer look. It's tempting to snag some of the prizes, but she keeps her hands to herself. For now, anyway.

When Kariya speaks up, she turns to him and shrugs nonchalantly.]

Perhaps they've taken the day off, after all their hard work ripping us off. A shame; they really should have locked up their goods.

Especially the jewels. I didn't know carnivals could afford to give that sort of stuff away.
hawkeward: (right carry on then)

[personal profile] hawkeward 2012-06-29 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Normally, they can't, but Mayfield is very fond of breaking out of the norm like this...

[She reaches up to take one such prize, a diamond ring, and lets out a low, impressed whistle as she inspects it. It looks awfully real, yup.]

Maker's breath, it's a thief's dream come true.

You don't think this might be a trap, leaving all of this out here in plain sight for us to just walk up and take?
hawkeward: (lovable scamp)

[personal profile] hawkeward 2012-06-29 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, it's very possible. This ring could very well bite my finger off, should I put it on.

[And wear the jewelry she does not, though she doesn't put it away just yet]

Then again, we've little to gain from stealing these things. If we went and sold these to someone, what would we do with the money? Buy a way back home?

[personal profile] waiting_for_the_worms 2012-06-29 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I suppose you're right about that.

[He briefly glances back at the prizes lined up along the wall, as if considering taking a few things for himself.]

But from what I've heard, a lot of what happens here doesn't make much sense.

New in town, I take it?

That's one of the first things one learns about Mayfield, yes. Nothing makes sense, don't drink the milk, and so on. There's a good chance nothing will happen, too. I think they like making us nervous - keep everyone on their toes.

I've only been here for about a week, so this is my first time for this kind of thing. I'm not really sure what to expect.
hawkeward: (why yes i am kind of a big deal)

[personal profile] hawkeward 2012-07-01 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
I've been here a year, and I'm still not sure what to expect, sometimes. Right when you think you've seen everything...

[She eyes the ring a moment longer, before putting it back.] Never really been much for jewels, myself.

[personal profile] waiting_for_the_worms 2012-07-01 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)
...Hmm. Well, if they're safe to take, maybe I should bring back some souvenirs for the girls.

[personal profile] hawkeward 2012-07-02 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Not a bad idea; they look real enough that they would make lovely gifts. If my sister or Isabela were still here... alas.

"The girls," hm? Daughters, lovers...?

[personal profile] waiting_for_the_worms 2012-07-02 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
[Kariya gives a good-natured laugh at that.]

Haha, no... my niece and her sister, actually.
hawkeward: (um excuse you)

[personal profile] hawkeward 2012-07-02 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
What a fine uncle you are! My own dear uncle would sooner sell the trinkets to whoever had a few sovereigns in his pocket than give them away as gifts.

[personal profile] waiting_for_the_worms 2012-07-02 12:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd do anything for those girls.

[personal profile] hawkeward 2012-07-02 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
That, serah, is a rare trait. You ought to be proud.

[personal profile] waiting_for_the_worms 2012-07-02 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a shame it's so rare.
