welcome to mayfield: day 1

[As you step out of the funhouse, blinking against the strong sunlight, it may seem at first that you've wound up back where you started. The carnival with all of its joys and wonders still stands, the Ferris Wheel looming majestically over Mayfield...

...except, did it always look that new and shiny? And it's not the only thing that got a makeover either; it seems like everything in the carnival has been fixed up from its previously rundown state. Fresh coats of paint gleam from every stand and every ride, and there isn't a spot of rust or a broken board anywhere in sight. At the entrance of the carnival hangs a large banner that reads:

Welcome to Mayfield - the Happiest Town on Earth!

Just how long were you exploring the funhouse for, anyway?

And as you start taking in the changes, you may notice one other minor difference: there are no drones to be found anywhere. It seems like the only other living beings in this place are your fellow townspeople who also entered the funhouse...well, that and the large, vicious looking rats that scurry around from place to place. But don't worry, there aren't that many of them and they only come out at night! So go ahead and enjoy having the carnival all to yourselves; after all, with all those minor safety issues fixed up, what could possibly go wrong?

The back exit of the carnival leads to a small street with four standard Mayfield houses and its church at the end. Attempting to leave the carnival via the entrance (although we can't imagine why you would) will only wind up looping you to the end of this street. Where the rest of Mayfield has gone, well...who can say?]

[After appearing in this strange new Mayfield, Hawke wanders toward the rollercoaster first. She stares up at it warily, as though waiting for it to fall apart at any moment.]

Is anyone actually going to ride that thing? I'm sure it's not dangerous at all or anything.

No, of course not. Why would Mayfield ever set us up with something dangerous?

[ Which is to say, in agreement. ]

Exactly! I mean, look at the sign: happiest town on earth. Surely we're not all going to die horribly or anything.

People are just too suspicious of new circumstances, I guess.

[Perhaps he wasn't so keen to go on the ride itself, but it was certainly worth checking out the vicinity. Lucas climbs into the cars and begins to examine each one methodically for... holes or clues or whatever it is they were looking for.

...He wonders if used gum wrappers count as 'codes'.]

Oh- uh- [ Very not-so-casually jogging up and grabbing the edge of one of the cars himself. Young Lucas, what art thou doing. ] It's kind of dangerous to be climbing into these, isn't it?

[Rory catches Lucas at a moment when his butt and legs and dangling out of one of the cars while his head is underneath a seat. The legs wave in distress.

If he speaks Morse code, they are spelling out 'H-E-L-P-I-M-S-T-U-C-K'. ...Well no that's a lie but he probably is.]

[ He reads you loud and clear, Lucas. There is appropriate stuttering to go for it while he rushes forward to start extricating one child from a roller coaster car.

Mayfield. Anything can happen. ]

Right, just- uh- hold on, sorry- are you all right?

[The flailing probably doesn't help much, but Lucas will pop out soon enough. Hopefully without having kicked Rory too many times.]

...Ow. A-Ah, yes, I'm fine! Thanks...

[...It's been a while since he's seen the man, but Lucas doesn't forget very easily. He'll blink a little in surprise.]

Oh, Mr. Rory!

[A joyous reunion.]

...Ah, so it's your face that's all over the carnival in Mayfield.

[Or not.]

[ Ah, kicking happens just about everywhere anyway. One of the staples of a life traveling the universe. He grimaces a bit with the observation. ]

So you noticed that, then.

[extraordinarily]

[ After wondering around a little bit, Haruhi's noticed that none of her really close friends are here. In other words: time to drag some random people along and get into the front of the roller coaster! ]

[genkibot]

[Tachikoma happens to notice Haruhi waiting in line and comes over to say hello.]

Hi again! Are you going to ride the coaster later?

[extraordinarily]

Probably.

[ Haruhi shrugs a little, nonchalant about the situation. ]

It doesn't look too run down like the other carnival.

[genkibot]

It does seem much shinier than the other! And less limb severing as well.

But part of the track is missing!

[Tachikoma points to a section that just vanished. Or did. Maybe. It's back now.]

Oh, wait, it's back! I wonder how it's doing that?

[extraordinarily]

[ Haruhi gulps, noticing that. ]

I don't think it's a good idea to ride it then.

[ She sighs after that, uncertain. She really wanted to ride the roller coaster, too! ]

Well, if you want a roller coaster ride, I can promise to give you one when I have my wire shooters back!

With those it wouldn't be hard for me to simulate the hills and turns of a roller coaster even in a mostly flat building area like Mayfield!
