welcome to mayfield: day 1

[As you step out of the funhouse, blinking against the strong sunlight, it may seem at first that you've wound up back where you started. The carnival with all of its joys and wonders still stands, the Ferris Wheel looming majestically over Mayfield...

...except, did it always look that new and shiny? And it's not the only thing that got a makeover either; it seems like everything in the carnival has been fixed up from its previously rundown state. Fresh coats of paint gleam from every stand and every ride, and there isn't a spot of rust or a broken board anywhere in sight. At the entrance of the carnival hangs a large banner that reads:

Welcome to Mayfield - the Happiest Town on Earth!

Just how long were you exploring the funhouse for, anyway?

And as you start taking in the changes, you may notice one other minor difference: there are no drones to be found anywhere. It seems like the only other living beings in this place are your fellow townspeople who also entered the funhouse...well, that and the large, vicious looking rats that scurry around from place to place. But don't worry, there aren't that many of them and they only come out at night! So go ahead and enjoy having the carnival all to yourselves; after all, with all those minor safety issues fixed up, what could possibly go wrong?

The back exit of the carnival leads to a small street with four standard Mayfield houses and its church at the end. Attempting to leave the carnival via the entrance (although we can't imagine why you would) will only wind up looping you to the end of this street. Where the rest of Mayfield has gone, well...who can say?]

Well see, that's the problem. It seems nice and perfect, and that's exactly why I don't trust it.

Perhaps it simply creates more perfect constructs because there are fewer of them.

So all the energy it didn't use on people and stuff it put into the rides? Is that what you're saying?

[answerer_sword]

Something like that.

Could be, I guess.

[He scratches his head.]

What kind of energy do you think we're talking about here?

[answerer_sword]

Maybe something magical. Or maybe it is not energy. Maybe it is the concentration of this reality warper?

[fasterthan]

Yeah that makes sense. I've been through something like that before, actually. In that case it was this kid with crazy psychic powers.

[answerer_sword]

Really? An esper could warp reality itself?

[fasterthan]

Sort of? I dunno, we never really figured out if he was actually warping reality or just what we were seeing, you know?

[answerer_sword]

So do you think it can also apply here? Are we just under some sort of mass hypnosis?

[fasterthan]

[He shrugs.]

Maybe. I mean everybody's got theories, you know? That's really all I've got right now.

[answerer_sword]

I suppose we will know once we find some way to contact the "outside" world.

[fasterthan]

Hopefully. That may be the only way.

[answerer_sword]

Do any of the communication devices here work? Besides the tape recorders?

I don't think so.

[answerer_sword]

Then we have no way of proving any theory, not unless someone from Mayfield comes here or if someone is able to return to Mayfield.

[fasterthan]

Right. And even then we probably can't be sure about what's happening until we figure out what the deal with Mayfield is.

From what I know, it does have mechanisms that can be damaged and destroyed. So I would have to say it is some form of human science. And yet the abilities the town shows seem to be tied in to magic.

Yeah, it's all weird.

[He offers a hand to shake and grins.]

[She considers it a bit, and then reaches out to take the hand.]

[He shakes her hand warmly before releasing it.]

Anyway. Any idea what this place is for?

I do not know. Possibly to trap those of us who dared try to exit Mayfield?

What, like through the fun house? But it's not like anybody knew it would take us out of Mayfield.
