welcome to mayfield: day 1

[As you step out of the funhouse, blinking against the strong sunlight, it may seem at first that you've wound up back where you started. The carnival with all of its joys and wonders still stands, the Ferris Wheel looming majestically over Mayfield...

...except, did it always look that new and shiny? And it's not the only thing that got a makeover either; it seems like everything in the carnival has been fixed up from its previously rundown state. Fresh coats of paint gleam from every stand and every ride, and there isn't a spot of rust or a broken board anywhere in sight. At the entrance of the carnival hangs a large banner that reads:

Welcome to Mayfield - the Happiest Town on Earth!

Just how long were you exploring the funhouse for, anyway?

And as you start taking in the changes, you may notice one other minor difference: there are no drones to be found anywhere. It seems like the only other living beings in this place are your fellow townspeople who also entered the funhouse...well, that and the large, vicious looking rats that scurry around from place to place. But don't worry, there aren't that many of them and they only come out at night! So go ahead and enjoy having the carnival all to yourselves; after all, with all those minor safety issues fixed up, what could possibly go wrong?

The back exit of the carnival leads to a small street with four standard Mayfield houses and its church at the end. Attempting to leave the carnival via the entrance (although we can't imagine why you would) will only wind up looping you to the end of this street. Where the rest of Mayfield has gone, well...who can say?]

I was already here. I got bored just walkin' around the fairgrounds so I decided to retire early.

[He gives a small chuckle.]

An' yeah, I guess that's true.

Aha... It's just flashing lights, though. I can't make any designs like what we saw on the 4th last year...

I think a lot of us are probably going to have to share one house, right? There must be at least thirty people here...

Yeah...the 4th....I was, ah, kinda outta it that day. Fightin' off my drone memories an' all. So I must've missed that.

True The least they could do is put up a couple more houses...namely some without half the floor missin'.

[Lucas glances at the floor.]

This was all normal when I came in earlier... I think someone just pried it up to look for clues.

[railtracer]

Really? [And now he's wondering why he never thought of that.]

Well either way they could've put the boards back at least.

Maybe just to let us know that they've gone through this part already.

[Lucas has the habit of giving people the benefit of the doubt, no matter what the circumstances.]

Ah, it's not enough that we can't still lie down comfortably!

[railtracer]

That's true, and hey there's still some floor left in the closets here. It looks like whoever ripped up the floor didn't get that far.

Oh... I'm sure we can find a good spot somewhere! I might fit in a closet, but I think it'd be tight for you.

[railtracer]

If I can't find a spot and if it's too crowed, I can always sleep in the basement or somethin'.

...It's probably just as comfortable as the upper floors would be, honestly. I should have thought to bring a pillow.

[railtracer]

All I brought was a flashlight and some candy. [And a gun. But he's not letting on about that.]

I really wasn't expectin' to end up in a place like this. Though I should have given that brochure I got last year.

I think I expect to explore a new town at least once a year nowadays. Which brochure was that?

Some doll named Alice was handin' them out to new people. She isn't here anymore though.

Ah, there've been a few of those. I think they mostly say the same thing. It was probably talking about Westport.

[railtracer]

Yeah, that's it. It also mentioned that Maipole place an' a bunch of other stuff.

Did you have any questions about any of it? I might be able to answer...

[railtracer]

Not really. Still, with all I've been through it's still kinda hard to believe. The stuff their tryin' to cover up that is.

[a_gentle_boy]

Cover up? ...You mean about the war and the emulation and things? With all the strange things that go on, though... It almost makes more sense.

[railtracer]

For the life of me I can't understand why they would choose to cover it up with threats about the milk, an' sendin' people to who knows where. Sure, it may almost make sense, but even with my line of thinking I still can't figure out why they do half the stuff they choose to do here.

If they really wanted us to stay here and be happy, they wouldn't do all of that. You're right; that's the one thing I just don't get at all.

[railtracer]

Bingo.

I mean they could just be trying to test how far they can push us until we break, but still.

[a_gentle_boy]

...It makes me wonder how much they're really all in agreement. Everyone is scared of Lucy - Zemekis - but then... beneath that, there are a lot of people who have their own goals to pursue.

[railtracer]

I don't know...I've only been here a year and only heard a few of those conversations and that Samantha doll's ramblings. So I can't really voice my opinion on that matter.

...Well. I guess until we find something new, just talking about it doesn't help much, either.
