welcome to mayfield: day 1

[As you step out of the funhouse, blinking against the strong sunlight, it may seem at first that you've wound up back where you started. The carnival with all of its joys and wonders still stands, the Ferris Wheel looming majestically over Mayfield...

...except, did it always look that new and shiny? And it's not the only thing that got a makeover either; it seems like everything in the carnival has been fixed up from its previously rundown state. Fresh coats of paint gleam from every stand and every ride, and there isn't a spot of rust or a broken board anywhere in sight. At the entrance of the carnival hangs a large banner that reads:

Welcome to Mayfield - the Happiest Town on Earth!

Just how long were you exploring the funhouse for, anyway?

And as you start taking in the changes, you may notice one other minor difference: there are no drones to be found anywhere. It seems like the only other living beings in this place are your fellow townspeople who also entered the funhouse...well, that and the large, vicious looking rats that scurry around from place to place. But don't worry, there aren't that many of them and they only come out at night! So go ahead and enjoy having the carnival all to yourselves; after all, with all those minor safety issues fixed up, what could possibly go wrong?

The back exit of the carnival leads to a small street with four standard Mayfield houses and its church at the end. Attempting to leave the carnival via the entrance (although we can't imagine why you would) will only wind up looping you to the end of this street. Where the rest of Mayfield has gone, well...who can say?]

[She doesn't relax just yet, but she does take a step forward.]

Yeah... are you from Mayfield?

...Well, not originally, anyway. But that's how I got here.

[She's able to relax, then, and she smiles.]

Okay, good. [Pause.] Well, it's not that good. I haven't run into anyone from this strange place at all...

The whole place seems to be deserted, except for those of us who came here from Mayfield.

... I can't tell if that's a good thing or a bad thing. We don't have to deal with any drones, but... that just makes the whole place seem more eerie, doesn't it?

You're right. It's too empty. It's like a ghost town.

... Do you think something happened here? Or maybe this is some new trick created by the people running Mayfield...

It's a trick. It has to be. Based on everything I've heard, this kind of thing isn't really out of line for Mayfield.

Yeah... it has to be. I've been around for some of the horrible things Mayfield has done, and this definitely seems like their handiwork...

But still. I haven't seen anything like this before.

[waiting_for_the_worms]

We all need to try to stick together until we can figure out how to get back. It'll be safer in numbers.

[She nods.] Yeah, good plan. I'm used to fighting alongside others, so that seems like the best course of action.

[There's a pang in her chest at her own words. Reminding herself of her dear Servant, who's back home without her, whose mindless drone is still living in her house, really hurt. Can't dwell on that now, though..]

Oh, my name is Hakuno. Hakuno Kishinami. If we're all stuck here together, we might as well know who's who, right?

[Kariya smiles, hoping it's at least a little comforting to this girl. She seems about Rin and Sakura's age, so he's feeling protective.]

Kariya Matou. Nice to meet you, Hakuno. I think my niece Sakura is about your age.

Matou... Sakura.... [She knows those names. Only in passing conversation, but still.]

That means... you must know Rin, right?

[waiting_for_the_worms]

That's right. Rin is her older sister.

Yeah, I haven't met Sakura [damn muncesting] but Rin's told me about her briefly.

Rin is... a very dear friend of mine. I'm glad to have met more of her family.

[waiting_for_the_worms]

Sakura's a very sweet girl. She and Rin and I have always been close.

[Kariya smiles a little wistfully.]

Likewise. It's nice to know Rin's making friends here.

[Since she can be kind of... difficult at times.]

She's made a few! [She's not sure how many, but the sleepover showed that she has... you know. A-At least three friends. That's good, right?]

I think you'd be very proud of her. Rin has helped me out a lot. [She can't really go into details, what with confusing alternate universe stuff, but she can say that much, at least.]

Rin's always been like that. She can be a little proud sometimes, but she's a good person at heart. I'm glad she's found some people she can rely on herself, though.

A little? [Hakuno chuckles, but it sounds more fond than mocking.] Yeah, I agree with you there... it took me a while to see it, but no matter what she does or says, I'll always remember that side of her.

[Her smile fades a little at the memory. Sure, she had gotten to see Rin's softer side... but that was only at the very end, as Rin was dying.] I'm thankful for getting stuck in this place, in a way. I didn't have much time to spend with her back home. Mayfield gave me that.

That must means she trusts you, then.

[Kariya smiles sadly, nodding.]

I know what you mean. I didn't have enough time with her at home either. I'm actually very thankful Mayfield gave me another chance to get to know her and be a part of her life.
