welcome to mayfield: day 1

[As you step out of the funhouse, blinking against the strong sunlight, it may seem at first that you've wound up back where you started. The carnival with all of its joys and wonders still stands, the Ferris Wheel looming majestically over Mayfield...

...except, did it always look that new and shiny? And it's not the only thing that got a makeover either; it seems like everything in the carnival has been fixed up from its previously rundown state. Fresh coats of paint gleam from every stand and every ride, and there isn't a spot of rust or a broken board anywhere in sight. At the entrance of the carnival hangs a large banner that reads:

Welcome to Mayfield - the Happiest Town on Earth!

Just how long were you exploring the funhouse for, anyway?

And as you start taking in the changes, you may notice one other minor difference: there are no drones to be found anywhere. It seems like the only other living beings in this place are your fellow townspeople who also entered the funhouse...well, that and the large, vicious looking rats that scurry around from place to place. But don't worry, there aren't that many of them and they only come out at night! So go ahead and enjoy having the carnival all to yourselves; after all, with all those minor safety issues fixed up, what could possibly go wrong?

The back exit of the carnival leads to a small street with four standard Mayfield houses and its church at the end. Attempting to leave the carnival via the entrance (although we can't imagine why you would) will only wind up looping you to the end of this street. Where the rest of Mayfield has gone, well...who can say?]

OOC and extra information about this town can be found here - please read it before you start tagging! Remember, only those in the first group should be in this post!

[ Loken enters the church, tensing up at the sign of overt religious faith as always, and rumbles softly. ]

Not so much of a sanctuary now, eh?

Not anymore, perhaps.

(Says the girl with her flying dolls just walking into the church.)

At least the one in town was properly maintained. Why would they leave this one empty?

Speculating on the motives of the masters of this town is pointless, as they have proven to be utterly insane. However, I can venture that this part is... unfinished, in some way.

Perhaps so. Wherever we are, it's completely blocked off from Mayfield, though it looks more like the rest of this area hasn't been added on yet.

Could you put those down? [ He gestures to the dolls. ]

They distract me.

[ Garviel's unease around sorcery is fairly obvious. Not fear.... just, a tension of sorts. ]

Hmm? (Oh, her dolls. They don't seem to get many fans...oh well. With a wave of her hand, they all take seats against the wall. Might as well play sentry in case anything happens.)

I apologize; I'm accustomed to having them around. You must be able to get along just fine without such protection, right?

What do you think? [ He asks, looking down at his armor. He relaxes slightly, though.]

It would be wise to fortify this structure.

[personal profile] suicidoll 2012-06-29 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
(Ah, now that's an impressive suit of armor. Durable, thick...a space marine, perhaps?)

It certainly would. The problem lies in materials for such fortification...specifically, the lack thereof.

Yes, we seem to be lacking in that regard.

Perhaps I can station my dolls outside, if you wouldn't mind; they make for very reliable guardians.

Do as you like.

Very well then; I'll proceed to do so now.

(And out she goes, bringing all of her dolls with her. Hooray, they're gone!)

[personal profile] the_girl_who_waited 2012-06-30 12:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Afraid not. [ She'll catch on how to nervous he is, the girl's unusually calm demeanor a stark contrast. ] Not much of anything is left here.

[personal profile] captainofthe10th 2012-06-30 02:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Reasonably defensible though, at least. Good day, Mamzel. [ He nods as he turns around, eyes narrowed a bit as he peers at her, as if trying to make out what to think of her, other than brave. ]

[personal profile] the_girl_who_waited 2012-06-30 02:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure about that. The position of this building doesn't offer much protection from all sides. [ It seems she's already dismissed it as a fortress, but: ] It'd make alright shelter should something happen.

Besides, it's large enough to be a common place to meet up with everyone if necessary.

[personal profile] captainofthe10th 2012-06-30 02:08 pm (UTC)(link)
The second floor makes it a decent position to fire from. The houses and the rest of the available structures are... too small. And people have always rallied at the church, for whatever reason. [ He looks vaguely disgusted by the idea. ]

[personal profile] the_girl_who_waited 2012-06-30 02:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Because the church has always been a good sign of faith. Even for those who don't believe in it can find people who are kind and strong there.

That's why you're here, isn't it?

[personal profile] captainofthe10th 2012-06-30 02:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Faith has a quality, even when religion is gone... as Sindermann used to say. [ he considers the question a moment and says ]

I cannot speak to my own kindness and strength in this place, but I'm here to protect humanity, and fight against the hidden masters of this town. So I'm where I need to be.

[personal profile] the_girl_who_waited 2012-07-01 02:23 pm (UTC)(link)
[ He seems like one of those guys that can't boast over their own strengths. Ideal and humble, she wonders just what a town like Mayfield can do to a person like that. ]

The hidden masters of this town? [ Time to pry where she shouldn't, but maybe this will help her gain the same knowledge that both Rory and the Doctor already had. ] Could you tell me more about them?

[personal profile] captainofthe10th 2012-07-01 05:56 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Hurt him, mostly. Break his hearts without ever breaking his spirit. ]

Well, as near as I can tell, someone names Zemeckis runs this down, and masquerades as a little girl. There is a Mayor, and that disturbing red-haired woman who.... well, she built a replacement for the old resurrection machine after I destroyed it, thinking it was the vat of memories and existences where our droned brethren were stored. I wanted to free them, and ended up hurting everyone.
