welcome to mayfield: day 4

[This carnival seems to be getting less and less maintained by the day. Your nerves aren't the only thing fallen apart: what were previously holes in the sky have expanded to cracks. What parts of the sky that haven't fallen into that strange, warping nothingness are full of brown smog-like clouds.

The carnival itself has become filthy, with trash and grease spots littered everywhere. The walls of the tents, wooden stands, and houses seem to be slightly melted, for lack of a better term. The holes of corrupted nothingness aren't confined to the sky anymore: pockets of nothing litter the carnival, shifting tears in the fabric of reality that hurt your eyes to look at.

A faint buzzing noise fills the air, making it difficult to concentrate. If you listen long enough, it starts to sound like voices. For your own sake, it's probably best not to listen to what they have to say.

You're also not alone here anymore, for those of you operating under the assumption that you ever really were. If you've been missing the friendly drones of Mayfield, fear no more, because scattered throughout the carnival are a few drone families seeing the sights, riding the rides and playing the games. Curiously, unlike the drones back home, these ones don't seem to notice you at all, acting as if you're not even there.

Also curiously: their features are warped nearly beyond recognition. Some are missing limbs or facial features; others appear to have had those features scrambled by Picasso's paintbrush, with mouths on their scalps or teeth on their fingers. Still other drones appear to be fused together at the wrist, or waist, or face. None of them seem to be any more aware of their deformity than they are of you.

...and yet, somehow, you can't shake the feeling that when you're not looking at them, they're looking at you.

New here? That's alright; your missing friends have had plenty of time to get acquainted, and they'll be happy to show you around. Just watch your step, because some of these old rides need some maintenance...]

For now, we should probably avoid the holes... And the drones too. [She casts a wary look at some nearby that are fused at the waist and missing some limbs.]

That's probably for the best. The drones don't look hostile, just... disturbing.

And we don't know if they'll become hostile or not. With how much this place is falling apart, I wouldn't be surprised...

[waiting_for_the_worms]

We'd better be prepared for it if this lasts too much longer.

Yeah, you're right... Though with all these holes, I'm not sure if this place can last much longer.

[waiting_for_the_worms]

Let's hope it spits us out somewhere safe, then, instead of just collapsing in on us.

[technologic]

Or we get erased completely thanks to... whatever is in those cracks. [She sighs quietly, rubbing her forehead.]

... How have you been holding up?

[waiting_for_the_worms]

Don't talk like that. We have to keep hoping for the best.

...I'm fine, I guess.

[technologic]

I know, I know, sorry... But no matter what happens, we probably won't be stuck here for much longer.

... That's good. I, ah, guess I kinda worry, with all this stuff going on...

[waiting_for_the_worms]

I think anyone would worry in a situation like this.

[technologic]

You're right about that. I guess there's just the fear of waking up the next day and finding out a friend got hurt or worse.

[She sighs and shakes her head.] But dwelling over that isn't gonna help, huh?

[waiting_for_the_worms]

We just have to do the best we can right now.

[technologic]

Right! [She gives a few nods.]

We just have to keep going and we'll be out of here soon. [And then her voice becomes quiet as she mumbles to herself.] ... I hope Bernie is alright...

[waiting_for_the_worms]

Who's Bernie...?

[technologic]

Oh, ah... [She looks a bit embarrassed now.] M-my dog... He's stuck with the drones in the house back in Mayfield, s-so I'm hoping they looked after him...

[waiting_for_the_worms]

Oh.

[He smiles a little at that.]

I'm sure he's all right.

[technologic]

[She gives him a small smile back.] Hopefully. He's still a puppy, but he should be fine...

... Do you wanna meet him when we get back to Mayfield?

[waiting_for_the_worms]

Sure. That sounds nice.

[technologic]

[Her smile brightens a bit.] Okay! Though I should warn you that he really likes meeting new people and tends to drool on them.

[waiting_for_the_worms]

[He laughs, smiling.]

A little drool is no problem.

[technologic]

[She laughs too and gives a nod.]

That's true. Though he's gotten pretty big already, so it might not just be a 'little'.

What kind of dog is he?

[technologic]

The person at the pet store said that he is a St. Bernard.

[waiting_for_the_worms]

Wow, you weren't kidding, then! He must be pretty big.

[technologic]

Ehe, yep! He's only a couple of months old, but he's already gotten big. Hopefully I'll have trained him enough so that he doesn't run people over when he's fully grown.
