welcome to mayfield: day 3

[Those who wake up in the town on the third day will soon notice that something's definitely off. The cracks in the sky are appearing more frequently and lasting for minutes at a time, and there's a strange white fog drifting over the clouds.

For those who've just arrived, welcome to our new little town! We're sure you're glad to see your missing friends again; nothing to worry about here, they've just been too busy enjoying the upgraded carnival to go back home. Any bleeding limbs or serious wounds you may spot are obviously just a sign of how much fun they've been having.]

OOC: If your character damages or affects the carnival or town in a noticeable and normally permanent way, please comment here.

[Hajime isn't exactly hungry and pitiful. Incredibly nosy as he investigates this tiny swatch of Mayfield, sure. He didn't think anyone actually lived in these houses, and he's smelling something cooking. That bears investigating, so he's just going to try to get inside to take a look.]

[Natalie hears someone enter, and moves herself to stand in the doorway to the kitchen. She's got a knife in one hand, and is ready to greet the newcomer in whatever way is most appropriate.]

...Hajime.

[Which is, in this case, soft surprise.]

You came to look, too.

[It's not a question. She doesn't need to ask. She knows the answer.]

[Oh, hey, being greeted by a knife. That...doesn't really seem to bother him much.]

Natalie.

[He nods.]

Just keeping an eye out for anything unusual.

This entire place is unusual. You won't have to go far.

[She's not putting that knife away. No way, no how. But she's not brandishing it at him, and that has to count for something. She's dirty and bedraggled, but hardly as wrecked as some he might have wandered across.]

How long have you been here?

So I'm starting to gather. Still, I wasn't expecting to find anyone cooking.

[As long as the knife's not being brandished at him, he's cool. Putting it away if there was something crazy going on probably wouldn't be a good idea, anyway.]

I've only been here a few hours...after spending a few hours wandering around the fun house.

It's something to do with the leftover rat, after I've drained it dry. There's no food worth eating, here. Don't go to the carnival. Don't eat what's at the stand. It's... dangerous. [Although she was unclear as to how.]

A few hours... mmh. This is the third day I've been here.

Somehow, that's unsurprising. Nothing about that carnival is what I'd call safe.

[He's clearly quite surprised by what she's said next, however.]

That's...impossible. The fun house was only opened this morning, and if the only way here is through it...

[And now he's trying to work that out in his head. What happened to those past two days for him?]

Just when I thought this place couldn't get any more difficult.

This morning.... no. No. It's been three days for me. And you just went in... that was before I did.

[She looks profoundly disturbed to hear this.]

[Hajime doesn't look too thrilled to hear with all of this, himself.]

It looped me back around to the beginning a couple of times, but I can't have been in there for more than a few hours...

I take it those three days of yours have been rather difficult.

It's very large in there. And apparently time doesn't matter much, either...

[As for her own state? She shrugs.]

I've had worse. I don't need to eat the food or drink the water. I've been cautious. I'm not starving or dehydrated. I'm comparatively lucky.

I've experienced time outright stopping before, but never...whatever you'd call this.

[He nods.]

My own metabolism is fairly slow, so I should be all right for a while...there's nothing here to eat other than those rats, then?

[Because that carnival food he saw doesn't count. Didn't eat it in the first carnival, and he's not even considering it for the second.]

To my knowledge, I've never experienced time doing impolite things at all...

[She gives a nod of her own.]

Nothing that I'm aware of. This isn't meant to be a place that can be survived in. Not that I can see.

Scarab Undead could stop time momentarily...he was a bit of a problem until he was resealed.

[He glances out the window like he's giving the place another look. The word "survived" seems to have struck some sort of chord, particularly after reminiscing about an old fight.]

There should be a way. Surviving is...something I'm good at.

I can only imagine the sort of problems such a being would cause.

[She watches him as he stares out the window, tilting her head curiously. What thoughts were in his head?]

It likely won't be easy. Or pleasant. Or without consequence.

He was working with another. They took a few things from me. That made defeating them a bit difficult, but they were taken care of in the end...he had a weak spot. There's always a weak spot, if you look hard enough...

[He seems to jar himself out of his reveries and returns his full attention to Natalie.]

Survival will be a battle. That much, at least, I understand about this place.

I see. That's quite the accomplishment, to have thwarted him.

[It's said with some admiration in her tone. Hajime seemed damned impressive, from what little of his skill and power she had seen. A fantastic ally. That's why she felt so relieved to have him here, yes, of course, of course....]

...ah.

[Her own reverie evaporated.]

Survival always is. I think we're both ready to fight?

It was an interesting battle.

[And what he's not mentioning is that about all he did in that fight was figure out a way around the time stopping, then get his butt kicked seven ways to next Sunday so someone else had to do the rest of the heavy lifting.

And when she asks if they're both ready to fight, he actually smiles. He's got some respect for her strength as well; she was able to get away from him when he was in a crazy Joker rage, after all.]

Always.

I'm not sure I've ever heard a battle described as "interesting"...

[She laughed. With their resolve proven, it felt like time for some levity. Or a change of subject.]

...You may want to spend the night at the church, if you plan on sleeping. I may plan to be awake, but I can only hit so many rats at a time. The church seems to be warded against them.

When you've been in as many as I have, some become more memorable than others.

[He generally doesn't laugh all that much, but he does smile, and it's a genuine one.]

I'll keep that in mind, assuming I do decide to sleep...it seems as though it would be difficult here.

Aah... I think I see, then. [Maybe she did, maybe she didn't. Maybe she'd understand better someday, if she lived long enough.

His smile was certainly welcome.]

It might be. But exhaustion often wins out over comfort. Although... er, do you need to sleep much?

[He shrugs.]

Not a whole lot--my body's designed to be ready for a fight at any time. I'll be fine for a few days.

[He glances around the area.]

You've been staying here during the day?

That's good, then.

[Then she laughs and holds a finger up.]

Yes. This is where I'm staying. Don't tell anyone? Old habits die hard...

[He nods.]

Don't worry. I won't.
