welcome to mayfield: day 4

[This carnival seems to be getting less and less maintained by the day. Your nerves aren't the only thing fallen apart: what were previously holes in the sky have expanded to cracks. What parts of the sky that haven't fallen into that strange, warping nothingness are full of brown smog-like clouds.

The carnival itself has become filthy, with trash and grease spots littered everywhere. The walls of the tents, wooden stands, and houses seem to be slightly melted, for lack of a better term. The holes of corrupted nothingness aren't confined to the sky anymore: pockets of nothing litter the carnival, shifting tears in the fabric of reality that hurt your eyes to look at.

A faint buzzing noise fills the air, making it difficult to concentrate. If you listen long enough, it starts to sound like voices. For your own sake, it's probably best not to listen to what they have to say.

You're also not alone here anymore, for those of you operating under the assumption that you ever really were. If you've been missing the friendly drones of Mayfield, fear no more, because scattered throughout the carnival are a few drone families seeing the sights, riding the rides and playing the games. Curiously, unlike the drones back home, these ones don't seem to notice you at all, acting as if you're not even there.

Also curiously: their features are warped nearly beyond recognition. Some are missing limbs or facial features; others appear to have had those features scrambled by Picasso's paintbrush, with mouths on their scalps or teeth on their fingers. Still other drones appear to be fused together at the wrist, or waist, or face. None of them seem to be any more aware of their deformity than they are of you.

...and yet, somehow, you can't shake the feeling that when you're not looking at them, they're looking at you.

New here? That's alright; your missing friends have had plenty of time to get acquainted, and they'll be happy to show you around. Just watch your step, because some of these old rides need some maintenance...]

OOC: If your character damages or affects the carnival or town in a noticeable and normally permanent way, please comment here.

[that's...a lot of blood. if there wasn't so much of it, Once-ler would give in to the wobbly feeling that's been gnawing away at his legs for the last ten minutes and sink to his knees right here amongst all the scattered foot and brightly painted pieces of wood. looking at it for too long just makes him feel worse so he tries his very best not to, instead turning his concentration on a perfectly held-together cheeseburger laying on the ground across from him.

...okay, bad idea. his shoes look much better. just focus on those.

what am I gonna do? what am I gonna do?

he runs one hand through his hair, followed by the other. even though he knew eating them wouldn't do anything, the possibility that a nibble could be enough to trick his mind was so tempting. this is the equivalent of getting a rotten apple in your trick or treat bag, then having that snatched away in less than five seconds.]

This isn't FAIR!

[How nervous is Miku? She's down to one leek and a half, that's how nervous she is. Not only that, but she didn't have the foresight to bring water, so she's running the risk of overheating if she doesn't rest up soon. Plus, there's all this blood around, which doesn't really help her mental state.

But seeing someone starving? Well, she's played one or two roles before this where she was on the brink of starvation, so it's only a moment's hesitation before she snaps her whole leek in half and hands the other one to Once-ler.]

Eat. [She's tired enough that her voice sounds a little snappish, though still synthesized.] I'll be fine.

[Miku's voice jolts him out of his stupor, and once again all of that bottled up frustration is put on hold. he's tense enough to expect a fight but, when he turns on his heel, there's no one around. just that girl and one of her weird vegetables - and gosh, what does it say about his current state of mind where even that thing looks delicious - and...oh.

is she serious? is she really? he doesn't know if he should be flattered or guilty. in the end, it's the latter that wins out.]

It's okay. [he shakes his head.] I'm not...that bad. Save it for someone who is.

[Henry has come by the Once-ler, obviously looking at all the scattered food on the ground. It does look tempting, but it's all bad. The boy watches from afar looking towards the Once-ler, wondering what the man plans on doing. He's not going to eat this stuff is he? There's blood everywhere and even on the food. It's still gross but he's not surprised people want this stuff.

Then, he see's Once-ler yelling at the unfairness of the situation. Frowning, the boy approaches Once-ler, and is holding out a bagged sandwiched and a juice box. It looks a bit stale but it's still better than nothing.]

Here, eat.

[give him some credit - he's starving but he's not that desperate. he has his pride; that's good enough. he'd have to run those burgers through a washing machine to get all of the blood off anyhow, and by then no one's gonna want them. note to self: jot up blueprints for an automatic burger-ma-cleanifier if you get out of this alive.

he sees Henry approaching out of the corner of his eye, but more than that, he sees the sandwich and the juice box. he can feel his throat going dry just looking at them.]

Oh, Henry, don't. You need it more.
theboywiththebook: (I'm not crazy!)

Take them. I have enough food to keep going for another few days if I share.

[He's holding them out even more now, almost trying to shove them into Once-ler's hands.]
truffulacide: (a little sad but it's alright)

[it's tempting, the juice box more-so than the sandwich. his fingers tense, desperately wanting to grab that most of all, but he stops himself to give the boy a wary look.]

You're not just saying that, are you? I'm going to be upset if you are.

[he tries to sound snooty and authoritative, but it just comes out as plaintive. you wouldn't lie to me, would you?]
theboywiththebook: (it's coming)

[personal profile] theboywiththebook 2012-07-06 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not. I came in making sure I'd have enough to share.

[Also, don't try Once-ler. He knows that you like him.]
